5 Foods That May Make Sleep Apnea Worse

But did you know that your diet can also play a role in the severity of your condition? Let’s talk about five foods that you might want to think about cutting back on.
Bananas
Bananas offer some amazing nutritional value, and they are tasty. Unfortunately, though, they are not a great snack choice for people who suffer from obstructive sleep apnea. They can increase mucus production in the throat and mouth, thereby worsening breathing problems. If you decide that you do not wish to stop eating bananas altogether, it would be best to eat ones that are slightly green. The riper and sweeter bananas are, the more likely it is that they will contribute to increased mucus production.
Refined Carbohydrates
Some carbohydrates can be quite good for you. Others, though, such as those that have been heavily refined (added sugar is a prime example), can worsen your sleep apnea because they create an inflammatory response in the body. They can also contribute to weight gain, and obesity is a major risk factor for obstructive sleep apnea. Try swapping out refined carbs for whole-grain choices, and do your best to include an adequate amount of protein in your diet to help you deal with carb cravings.
Dairy
Many people believe that high-fat dairy products increase mucus production. However, that is not strictly true. While they do create a “thick” feeling in the mouth, they don’t actually lead to more mucus. With that being said, it is important to note that a study from 2008 found that sleep apnea sufferers who reduced their high-fat dairy intake noticed a reduction in their symptoms. It might be best to stick to reduced-fat dairy.
Alcohol
Alcohol might be able to help you drift off to sleep at night, but if you want to control your sleep apnea and stop snoring in Melbourne, it is best to limit your intake. It can cause the tissues in your throat to overrelax, leading to an increase in breathing problems while you are asleep. If you choose to drink, you should do so only in moderation. You should also make sure that your last drink is at least a couple of hours before bedtime.
Fatty Meats
The fat in meats is usually saturated fat, which can cause inflammation throughout the body and contribute to more severe sleep apnea symptoms. You might try swapping out fatty cuts of meat for leaner alternatives. Fish and chicken breast are usually safe choices.
